General Joomla News
I did not have a chance to watch the Andrew Eddie's presentation about Joomla 1.6 until yesterday.
I want share my optinions about this as a developer and as a Joomla web site owner (I've 3 Joomla made other than instantphp.com)
1. Significant upgrade in server requirements : Joomla 1.6 will need minimum PHP 5.2 and MySQL 5.0.4 . I think this is a good decision that Joomla developer team made. I've personaly left using php 4 and mysql 4 a long time ago
2. The legacy mode will be gone: All extensions must run Joomla 1.6 native. Some small changes to the code will be required to bring extensions in line with the new Access Control List features. You will not be able to run Joomla 1.0 components in legacy as you were in Joomla 1.5.
3. Access Control List features improved : New terms and features coming to the J! world with The Access Control List (ACL). The term are
• Rule Type 1 - Permissions related to actions, such as managing languages and the installer: What can I do?
• Rule Type 2 - Permissions related to content, such as adding and publishing articles: What can I do to a particular thing?
• Rule Type 3 - Permissions related to actions related to access levels, such as allowing the public to view all articles: What can I see?
4. The default template layouts will change: For templates a legacy will be provided to use Joomla 1.5 templates in Joomla 1.6 . Templates must be re-worked with Joomla 1.5
5. The 'Sections' will be removed completely and as a result of this URLs will change: Sections will be moved to categories. Users will ablke to have nested categories. This will effect the frontend layout and the arrangement of menu items. Nested categories will now be supported for each core extension (articles, banners, newsfeeds, contacts, weblinks).
Because of the sections are removed the URLs will be changed.
URL changing is a nightmare for me. All of my web sites were Joomla 1.0 .I have moved them to Joomla 1.5 nearly 6 months ago and I got success about keeping the all urls with playing core J! content router. (Old web sites were using OPENSEF and I've created the same URLs with playing J! content router). But How I'm going to do the same with J! 1.6, I've no idea
Nightmare about URLs and Joomla 1.6 continues for me
