Job Description
This position serves as a technical resource to support Amazon.com, its subsidiaries, correspondent and partner firms, and any other organization as directed. The position will ensure overall availability and reliability of multiple data center collocation facilities to meet or exceed defined service levels of data center operations.
The Data Center Engineer will be responsible for the management & operation of all mechanical, electrical and HVAC equipment within the data center including the coordination of preventative maintenance & repairs which may affect Amazon’s data center space. This equipment supports mission-critical servers and must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. The Data Center Engineer will continue to maintain high reliability and performance while driving innovation to reduce operational costs where possible.
The Data Center Engineer will have knowledge & experience including troubleshooting, operation & preventative maintenance of Mission Critical Facilities and associated components such as stand-by diesel generators and related fuel systems, 3 phase electrical systems that include but are not limited to switch gear, switch boards, ATSs, UPSs, PDUs, wet & dry cell batteries and associated systems, CRAC units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers/water chemical systems, air handlers and associated systems, pumps & motors. The Data Center Engineer will also be required to contribute to an on call rotation that may include 7-14 consecutive days of pager duty and requires the Data Center Engineer to respond to and resolve MEP failures and/or security alarms at any of Amazon’s Data Center sites.
The Data Center Engineer will be responsible for sourcing, deployment, and implementation including vendor management of data center collocation facilities. The Data Center Engineer will be responsible for the integration of all server & network rack deployments in the collocated facilities physical plant. Data Center Engineer will be responsible for communication of Amazon’s data center requirements to collocation management & staff, oversight of partner collocations critical data center engineering which supports Amazon.com & partners. The Data Center Engineer will ensure environmental conditions are within parameters as stated in contractual service level agreements with partnered collocation facilities. The Data Center Engineer must have ability to communicate in a clear and professional manner any issues which may compromise Amazon.com & partner’s data center environment, ensure appropriate measures are taken by vendors and maintain good standing with landlord.
The Data Center Engineer will also be flexible as far as being required to work in various locations as well as being able to understand general server/network fundamentals and assist/manage other Data Center Technicians w/ the deployment & operations of various server/network devices when necessary.
Experience and Skills:
- At least five years experience providing senior management and on-call support of multiple data center facilities.
- At least two years experience managing a facilities team and managing outsourced contractors; a natural team leader who can motivate and encourage advancement.
- An undergraduate degree in a technical field (EE, MechE, IndustrialE); advanced degree preferred.
- An excellent understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations including systems such as feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAC units.
- An understanding of the relationships between reliability, efficiency, and cost and the ability to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with a minimal impact on reliability.
- Excellent project management skills are required w/ ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should have experience in prioritizing tasks effectively and working seamlessly across organizational boundaries.
- Previous vendor negotiation and management skills for data center and/or upgrade construction contracts.
Conclusion:
This individual will also be responsible for providing leadership and project management of projects to start up new data center facilities and upgrade existing data center facilities. He/she will lead efforts between architecture, technical, negotiation, and other teams within Amazon.com to develop specifications, designs, and cost estimates for future data center projects. This individual will continue to maintain high reliability and performance while keeping operating costs in facilities at a minimum
